Discreet Smoke 6 Adds Tools
Depending upon the workflow setup, busy facilities and do-it-all boutiques can benefit if they integrate HD editing, effects, audio, and finishing into one system. Discreet designed Smoke to offer that soup-to-nuts efficiency. Based around the latest 64-bit SGI workstation, the turnkey Smoke system includes a well-rounded software suite that manipulates non-compressed RGB 4:4:4, 601, and HD in realtime.
Version 6 adds to Smoke's already extensive capabilities with features including Multi-Master Editing (create multiple formats from single timeline); a mixed-resolution desktop and editing timeline; realtime 10-bit 4:4:4 HD, 2K, and 3K editing (3K requires a specified level of hardware); and multi-format capture and playback (PAL/NTSC, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p (1080p also requires a tweaked workstation).
A short list of other new features: Unlimited vertical timeline editing with nested containers (necessary for complex visual effects); multi-channel audio editing and mixing; interactive 3D DVE; 3D compositing with high-speed tracking tools; improved keying tools; and extensive paint and 2D/3D text tools.
Discreet also goes Linux with Smoke SD, its first Intel-based workstation. Pricing around $75,000, the turnkey system offers realtime 8-bit 4:4:4 SD video I/O and playback for PAL/NTSC. www.discreet.com/products/smoke/
