Our reader surveys and website data tell us two things: You want information in a timely way and online, and many of you want to interact with each other—as peers and potential collaborators. Today, networking is more important than ever; knowledge must be more immediate than ever.

We’ve been investing in this cultural and professional sea change, both in how we deliver information to you and in services we’ve developed such as Reel-Exchange.com. Most recently, our parent company, Penton, made a significant investment in our market; as a result, we are currently developing a website that combines the information we have always delivered with more powerful networking and community features.

In a bull market, people consider rights and royalties management a luxury. But in a bear market, people become aware of every penny of uncollected revenue...

As those of you who read this column know, the new site was initially planned for launch this month. However, we’ve made an important strategic decision that we believe now deserves further investment. We’re seeing the desire to get involved online and to network is affecting the readers of our audio properties as well. At the same time, the line between audio and video, sound and picture, music and movies is blurring. Today, professionals may very well do both; they certainly want to understand both.

So it is natural to bring these communities closer together. We will maintain the discrete content that each relies on, but we will also allow them to share services and content, to network with each other, and to improve their knowledge as they see fit—whether in audio or video or both. This is a significant commitment and an ambitious one, both for millimeter and for our sister brand Electronic Musician. We think we have come up with a new, modern paradigm that will engage all our readers more thoroughly and make a more vital and relevant environment for our editorial. We’re excited to focus our resources on that opportunity and have the chance to innovate for you in the world you live in.

Between now and the end of the year, you’ll continue to see millimeter.com, reel-exchange.com, and emusician.com. We will continue to publish the reviews and feature stories that you rely on. On the millimeter side, our longtime writers Jan Ozer, David Leitner, Barry Braverman, Ellen Wolff, Franklin McMahon, and Dan Ochiva will continue to contribute their technical expertise. We will continue to support and promote our Reel-Exchange and Briefing Room users, and we will be building some new partnership relationships to bring you additional content. Our popular webcast series will continue.

We will discontinue millimeter’s print distribution in its current form, and we will develop a print strategy to support the new site, which will launch in January for our larger combined audience.
