Creative Suite 4 Production Premium

Adobe's Creative Suite package, now in its fourth iteration, is picking up speed as it accumulates the benefits of a strategy that once sounded more like marketspeak: By integrating once separate apps, all of designing, producing, and distribution tasks would benefit. Sure, the Production Premium package (you have six packages to choose from) delivers solid upgrades: You can work faster with RED, P2, XDCAM, and AVCHD material since you don't have to transcode or rewrap in Premiere Pro. And with Adobe OnLocation CS4 (finally available for the Mac), you can capture DV, HDV, and DVCPRO HD footage directly to disk with on-set clip annotation and metadata editing. Deep benefits come from widely deployed XMP metadata support, which uses spoken dialogue to make video searchable — significantly reducing the time spent searching for clips and creating rough cuts — and makes content searchable when delivered online. Adobe ConnectNow, meanwhile, allows realtime web-based collaboration with two colleagues or clients. (Click here for a more in-depth look, and see the December issue for individual product reviews.)
