Storage for post is pretty simple: It's either directly attached or shared in some fashion. For years, direct-attached storage has delivered the speediest throughput; now, new types of storage technology not only deliver speed, but also provide solutions for our unending need for more and more storage.
Avid's Unity ISIS media network is a good example of delivering on both counts. Debuted late last year, the ISIS (Infinitely Scalable Intelligent Storage) distributed-intelligence architecture challenges the traditional single centralized server design by ganging up to 16 individual storage blades. Each blade contains a processor, storage, firmware, and networking, enabling it to work more autonomously, yet share reading and writing tasks. The Unity ISIS collective workflow is speedier (up to 20X a typical RAID setup), more efficient, and offers much more scalability than typical SANs, according to the company. High reliability is claimed too: In a demo, drives were pulled at random, and the array didn't miss a beat, rebuilding on the fly. www.avid.com/unityisis
