Avid's New High-end NLE
Avid must be serious about drumming up new business. The Tewksbury, Mass.-based company turned up at IBC 2008 after passing on the previous two shows. Some observers had cited the costs of running a booth as one reason for the company's absence, because it struggled through market changes and a transition to a new CEO.
In any event, Avid used the September show to debut DS 10 (previously known as DS Nitris). DS 10 is a top-of-the-line NLE spotted for quick turnaround on effects, compositing, graphics, and conforming. With prices beginning at $60,000 for the turnkey system, users can expect hardware such as an HP xw8600 workstation, a 30in. monitor, 8GB RAM, 8TB of SAS storage, a rackmounted breakout box, and a Wacom tablet, along with an Avid DS 10 software license, DS 10 RP (remote processing), Media Composer software, and Avid MetaFuze. www.avid.com
