Integrated SD, HD effects platform
While the list of SD, HD, and even combo SD/HD cards grows, not many include integrated effects for both SD and HD. At IBC 2004, Matrox added to that new category with Axio, its new line of realtime HD and SD editing platforms that bundle in Adobe Premiere Pro. Axio features no-render 10-bit HD and SD editing and finishing (compressed and uncompressed formats); realtime primary and secondary color correction tools; and a full range of analog and digital audio and video I/O. Other items of note include realtime 3D DVEs, chroma/lumakeying, speed changes, blur/glow/soft focus, and edit support for a number of DV and MPEG formats. Look for product to ship early next year.
Price: $11,495 for HD version; $7,495 for SD only.

More flexible Premiere editing
No NLE is an island, we've learned. No matter how much you prefer one brand over another, sometimes you need to share projects, import composited sequences, and other such tasks. At IBC 2004, Automatic Duck adds to its NLE mediator duties with the unveiling of its latest timeline integration solution, Pro Import PPro, for users of Adobe Premiere Pro. Now those users can import AAF, OMF, and XML files from Final Cut Pro and Avid editing systems. Also announced: Pro Import AE 3.0, which imports files from Apple Motion, and XML files from Final Cut Pro. Both products ship later this year.

Better Liquid
With more standard-definition NLEs adding HD capabilities, users will have to compare feature sets once again to find the best deals. At IBC 2004, Pinnacle pumped up version 6 of its Windows-based Liquid Edition with HD chops and more. Standardization to the Windows GUI is an important change. Now dropdown menus, lists, and other controls work just like those of standard Windows programs. While both versions come in at a lowball price, impressive features in the Pro version include the ability to edit multiple streams of HD content; thousands of realtime effects; support for multicam editing, as well as Panasonic P2 and Sony XDCAM; and a nifty analog/digital breakout box.
Price: $499; $999 for Pro version (added features, DVD
authoring, breakout box, graphics card)

DI for DV
Most DV editors might think all the talk about the digital intermediate process is only for the feature film and commercials crowd with money to burn. But some aspects of that process — such as selective color processing — make as much sense for DVers as for DIers. With ViviClip's Pre-Wash DV Pro, thinking about DV post might start to change. This Microsoft Windows XP app promises to bring “a radical different video project concept” to that final DV tape. Features include selective color processing, advanced smart clips batch treatment (to prep files before editing), automatic color matching, progressive lens simulation, film effects, noise reduction, frame blending, and broadcast legalization.
