LED technology has already enabled news and documentary camera operators to move from hot, power-hungry on-camera quartz lights to small, lightweight LED units. Now, newer generations of brighter LEDs have started to replace standard set lighting.
Nila, which manufactures a number of larger light rigs, has released its modular JNH unit. An alternative to traditional HMI fixtures, the light is designed for studio and location work. The entry-level light employs a 200W HMI-equivalent daylight color balance fixture, and up to 10 JNH fixtures can be joined together.
With an LED rig you get great flexibility: There's no need to let the units cool down before moving them for example. Yet it's powerful, with a useful level of light delivered up to 100ft. away without any noticeable heat, according to the company.
Since each unit draws 65W of power, locking those 10 lamps together still only equals the amount of power a hair dryer might use. The integrated dimmer with LCD readout offers a range from 100 percent down to 0 percent with no noticeable color changes. Each light can also be controlled either from another unit or through DMX control.
