Video Systems November 2003ViewpointSystems+ContentBy Cynthia Wisehart, Editorial Director When I worked in production for the theme park and museum industry, I always heard systems integrators emphasize that they didn't do content. Naturally they wanted to be very clear that they didn't compete with their content-creating clients.... ShootFollow ThroughBy Barry Braverman Craft matters. Whether you're shooting HD with the latest Varicam or plain ol' DV with a modest Canon Elura 40MC, the ability to focus selectively within a scene lies at the heart of our craft.... Stand by Your WorkBy Bill Miller One of my peeves, pet or otherwise, is the lack of service that we have seen creep into our personal and professional lives.... EditReconsideringBy Bob Turner I find I am rethinking my arrogance. I have felt pretty cocky that high-end postproduction would not be pushed aside by low-cost, software-only products on consumer-type computers in the foreseeable future. At least, not for me. Now I am not so sure.... Edit Review — Adobe Premiere ProBy Frank McMahon The new version of Adobe Premiere is not so much an update as it is a warning shot across the bow of established high-end editing tools. Although Premiere has been used by thousands of professionals and amateurs for years, I have the sense that Adobe really wants everyone to think of their flagship editing software as a truly high-end professional tool.... Edit Review — Leitch dpsVelocityQ 8.2By Steve Mullen Over the past few years all eyes have been on the battle between Avid and Apple as the two companies have increased the ability of Xpress DV and Final Cut Pro to support realtime effects using only PC and Mac CPUs. I've watched this battle with a jaundiced eye because I've been editing in realtime with Canopus for almost five years. In fact, CPU-based realtime effects for SD footage are now so common that we just expect it.... Edit Tools — EZQuest

IntegrateBeyond PhotoshopBy Frank McMahon Adobe Photoshop has proven to be an indispensable tool for media artists around the globe, and it's in so many toolboxes of video producers that it is easy to take its power for granted. A lot of this power is unleashed through plug-ins, and while you may be familiar with plug-ins...... I also have some tapes recorded on the Panasonic PV-GS70, but will mostly be using the GL2. I need a DV VCR (VTR? I don't know the difference) that will give me the best-quality source video without a lot of bells and whistles. I don't even need it to record well, but of course, it would be nice.
