Mo-cap and Animation Workstation
Captured movement turns up in feature films, commercials, and music videos. More folks would use it, but integrating the motion-capture hardware along with third-party software isn't easy. Cost is another issue.
But there's a solution from Ascension that's worth a look. The Burlington, Vt.-based company, a longtime developer of magnetic-type mo-cap systems, recently released Animation Star, a PC-based “animation workstation.” This turnkey system includes a Pentium 4-based workstation, newly developed mo-cap tracker, a full-feature version of Kaydara's MOCAP 5.5 software, and a breakout box to hook it all together.
Animation Star controls the full-body magnetic motion tracker, which can work in an 8'×8' capture zone. A metal distortion shield is included to isolate the system from nearby metallic objects, which can distort measurements. Starter systems price less than $25K. www.ascension-tech.com
