Manhattan's street-level subway entrances now feature wireless electronic LED billboards. Urban Display Network (UDN) of Las Vegas, and Phoenix-based Clear Channel Outdoor, which has contracted with the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority for street-level advertising, created 20 working displays and plan to expand the network by 80 screens throughout New York's subway system during the first quarter of 2004.

UDN owns, maintains, and operates the Lighthouse LED LVP0620 displays and delivers the ad content through a Verizon digital wireless system. The Lighthouse screens boast a 6mm pixel pitch and 2000 nits brightness, as well as proprietary M4 technology, which includes 13-bit processing, uniformity control, and full remote diagnostic feedback.

The content delivery process is digital, with the ads sent via the Internet from Clear Channel in New York to UDN's Las Vegas office. In the Las Vegas office, the advertising content is scheduled using the Webpavement sign operating system and web-based server, edited by UDN's creative department, and finally uploaded to individual screens through the Verizon wireless connection.

Each screen is fitted with an omni-directional WiFi-Plus Ultra-M antenna. The screen housings were specially fabricated to withstand extreme temperatures. To prevent tampering and vandalism, all cabinets and electronics are completely enclosed, and special tools are required to open them.
