G.E. “Singing in the Rain”
In celebration of G.E.'s involvement with ecological research and development, a CG baby elephant recreates Gene Kelly's joyous rain dance. Images of real-life baby elephants were used as a template for the model and animation down to the smallest detail, including the wrinkles on the skin. The Quiet Man team imported some of the photographs of the South African elephants into Adobe Photoshop and then created brushes in Pixologic ZBrush software to paint wrinkle textures onto the model. Agency: BBDO, New York; Production Company: Pytka, New York; Director/DP: Joe Pytka; Music House: DMHA, New York; Editorial: Crew Cuts, New York; Co-Editors: Sherri Margulies, Matt Shapiro; Visual Effects: Quiet Man, New York.
HSBC “HSBC Commuter”
An Asian gentleman on the train falls asleep against the blue-collar worker next to him. The blue collar responds by nodding off on the shoulder of the woman next to him. Adding to the soporophic visuals — rocking train, napping commuters — is the soundtrack that features an actual saw, played by bending the tool and running a violin bow across it. Agency: JWT, New York; Production: Moxie Pictures, New York; Director: Errol Morris; Editorial: The Whitehouse, New York/Globe Department Store, Cambridge, Mass.; Editors: Marc Langley, Errol Morris; Music: Big Foote Music, New York; Saw Player: Dale Stuckenbruk; Writer/Arranger: Louis King; Audio Post: audioEngine, New York; Mixer: Hillary Kew.
MoveOnPac.org “Radical Rampage”
Animation company Flickerlab had 44 hours to create a herd of elephants trampling Washington, D.C. The source for the :30 spot consists of hand-matted, composited, and painted still images crafted into a photomontage. Built in Photoshop, pieces of 10 elephants comprise a single elephant, which was then animated in After Effects. To create the stampeding herd, the final elephant was placed in different positions. Agency: Zimmerman & Markman, Santa Monica, Calif.; Production: Z Creative, New York; Director/Editor: Harold Moss; Animation: Flickerlab, New York; Animators: David Michael Friend, Eric Merola; Sound Design: Tom Lino.
Unilever “Fountain”
Mr. Desperado sprays the Lynx fragrance onto a coin, then throws the coin into the fountain behind him when a pretty girl walks by. The girl leaps into the fountain, following the coin's scent, and comes up with coin in hand looking like a wet T-shirt competitor. Flame artist David Smith painted out unwanted shrubbery, added tiles to areas of the fountain, and enhanced the crisp, aqua grade. Agency: BBH, London; Production: Harvest Films, Los Angeles; Director: Baker Smith; Editorial: Whitehouse, Los Angeles; Editor: Rick Lawley; Telecine: Matt Turner, Framestore, New York; Post: Absolute, London; Flame: David Smith, Karsten Mikaelsen.
