Coordinator of Classroom Support Services/Senior Electronic Engineer

Organization: The Office of Instructional Services (OIS) at Colorado State University is a professionally-staffed University-wide organization responsible for providing solutions to instructional and other information transfer problems and professional development services for all faculty, staff, and graduate teaching/research assistants in support of the University’s general mission of teaching, research, and service. OIS includes direct classroom support, distance education technology, video production, computer-based graphics, instructional design, multimedia development, and photography, with a staff of 35 full-time professionals and approximately 20 student employees. Position: As Coordinator of Classroom Support Services/Senior Electronic Engineer, the person in this position functions in two crucial capacities. First, the position functions as the primary technical engineer and principal consultant involved in design of all instructional technology development and delivery systems, technology-supported (SMART) classrooms, and distance education support, and acts as the campus-wide leader in analog and state-of-the-art digital video systems including MPEG compression and DVD authoring systems, broadband analog and IP distribution, IP-based interactive video systems (H.323) and ISDN (H.320) video conferencing, microwave ITFS (digital and traditional FM) and modern mobile PCS systems. Second, the position functions as the manager of Classroom Support Services (CSS) and its subsidiary units (Classroom Equipment Services, Classroom Media Services, and Classroom Technical Services), which provide direct support to all campus instructional activities, instructional technology capabilities and traditional means of audiovisual support through student and professional staff. This person is involved in a variety of teams and committees working to build the instructional technology infrastructure of the University. The position works with faculty, staff, and other OIS managers to enhance the essential service function of the unit.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Typical Activities:

  1. As the University’s primary video and instructional technology/distance education technology engineer, consults with campus departments regarding equipment needs and analyzes and/or designs instructional technology proposals for resident instruction support and distance education applications.

  2. Works with other OIS unit coordinators to ensure appropriate technical support is in place for Graphic Services, Instructional Design & Technology, Photographic Services, Video Production Services, and the technology-supported distance education (CSUN) program. Coordinates with the OIS Network Manager to ensure standards compliance in the development of unit-wide digital storage and operating systems for video servers, video operations and archiving. Works cooperatively with Academic Computing & Networking Services (ACNS), University Libraries, and other University organizations to establish University information and instructional technology standards and ensure OIS compliance with those standards.

  3. With the Director of OIS, is integrally involved in all instructional and media facility strategic planning. Provides project leadership, design and coordination with University Facilities Management, Telecommunications, and ACNS to ensure timely and proper completion of campus construction and improvement projects.

  4. Fosters positive relationships with other University planners and faculty in support of information and instructional technology development. Participates in state/regional-wide planning initiatives related to technology issues in digital video distribution and emerging technologies.

  5. Has both leadership and hands-on responsibilities in the design, development and construction of technology-supported classrooms. Incorporates faculty input, information from a variety of professional sources as a part of this process. The position works closely with vendors, the Purchasing Department, and installers as appropriate. Oversees faculty training in the use of SMART classrooms.

  6. Supervises 10 professional staff and approximately 6 hourly employees. Writes position descriptions, coordinates work schedules and responsibilities with leadworkers, conducts annual performance evaluations, and with the Director is responsible for hiring and disciplinary procedures of CSS.

  7. Establishes procedures to support the missions of Classroom Equipment Services, Classroom Media Services, and Classroom Technical Services. Interacts with faculty clients. Meets regularly with leadworkers and staff to address and respond to faculty’s classroom concerns and equipment needs.

  8. Serves as a member of and technical advisor to the Classroom Review Board which provides oversight of over 150 general assignment classrooms.

  9. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Required Qualifications:


To be considered, candidates must have an appropriate technology-based foundation acquired and developed through a combination of experience and/or formal education:

  • A minimum of 5 years directly-related professional work experience including system design in a technology environment.

  • The ability to develop and implement a vision for a technology-in-instruction environment, and provide leadership.

  • Documented experience in staff management.

  • Well-developed communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully with individuals which may include: faculty and staff involved in both technical and creative areas; vendors; clients or other end-users.

Preferred Qualifications:


Further consideration will be given to candidates with:

  • Related college-level education.

  • Additional directly-related professional work experience beyond the 5-year minimum stated above.

This is an Administrative-Professional position, which reports to the Director, Office of Instructional Services. The minimum salary is $75,000 plus benefits, and is negotiable depending upon experience.
