International Documentary Association Rolls Out InFACT Theatrical Documentary Showcase on Four-City Tour
Aug 7, 2003 12:00 PM
LOS ANGELES - The International Documentary Association announced their Seventh Annual InFACT Theatrical Documentary Showcase will go on tour in an effort to further help filmmakers be eligible for Oscar consideration, and promote commercial theater runs for the genre. In addition to its August 22-28 run at the ArcLight Cinemas in Hollywood, InFACT will be shown in Del Mar, California; Little Rock, Arkansas; Austin, Texas; and Seattle, Washington.
"We have traditionally presented this Showcase in the Los Angeles area to meet the Academy requirement that documentary films must be exhibited on theatrical screens for seven consecutive days in Manhattan or Los Angeles County," says Sandra Ruch. "As of this year, Academy rules now also require a theatrical run in at least four additional cities. We saw this as great opportunity to take this amazing Showcase around the country. Not only are we helping deserving filmmakers meet Oscar eligibility rules but we're also encouraging the already growing popularity of documentaries in theatrical cinemas."
Since the inception of the IDA Showcase six years ago, 11 of the films featured, including last year's hit Spellbound, have been nominated for Academy Awards®. Two films from the IDA's Showcase, The Last Days and The Personals, took home Oscars.
After the completion of its Los Angeles run, the InFACT Showcase will head south where it will appear at UltraStar Flower Hill Cinemas (2630 Via de la Valle) in Del Mar from September 8-11. The next stop will be Little Rock, Arkansas where the Hot Springs Documentary Institute will present the Showcase at the Market Street Cinemas (1521 Merrill Drive) September 20-21. The tour continues with screenings at the 2003 Austin Film Festival from October 9-16. The final stop will be Seattle where Cinema Seattle will present the InFACT Showcase at the Landmark Varsity Theater (4329 University Way N.E.) from November 7-13.
The 2003 Showcase includes eight short films and 11 feature length documentaries.
The feature length documentaries are BEAH: A BLACK WOMAN SPEAKS, BREAKFAST WITH HUNTER, BUS 174, COSMIC AFRICA, Gabriel Orozco, Inheritance: A Fisherman's Story, THE KIDNAPPING OF INGRID BETANCOURT, LIBERTY: 3 STORIES ABOUT LIFE & DEATH, SUNSET STORY and THE WILD PARROTS OF TELEGRAPH HILL.
The short films (40 minutes or less) are America's Deadliest Storm: Galveston Island, 1900, AN UNLIKELY FRIENDSHIP, BEYOND WORDS, Chernobyl Heart, FERRY TALES, LOVE IN AN ELEVATOR, MILTON ROGOVIN: THE FORGOTTEN ONES, and OLIVIA'S PUZZLE.
The IDA is a non-profit organization based in Los Angeles. The organization was founded in 1982 to promote and celebrate non-fiction filmmakers. The IDA is dedicated to increasing public awareness and appreciation of the documentary genre.
