JVC Professional Products Company has announced its marketing agreement with 3DV Systems to sell the ZCam(tm), the world's first real-time depth-sensing camera system, in the United States.

Designed to meet the demanding requirements of the professional production market, 3DV Systems' ZCam enables studio and professional broadcast cameras to capture an additional dimension (depth), giving producers the ability to perform keying without the need for a fixed color background. It enables the integration of three-dimensional effects in real-time.

The ZCam employs depth-sensing technology that supplements every video frame with an additional frame called the "Zbuffer" which enables operators to capture and manipulate 3D data in real-time. Real-time separation utilizes depth keying rather than chroma keying, which normally requires blue screen compositing.

In this application, foreground elements can be shot and displayed against any background and in any lighting environment. ZCam captures and maps the third dimension so the user can place objects in various positions in a scene and implement special effects immediately, including illumination and augmentation of the 3D scene, allowing the introduction of real and virtual objects without the normal blue screen. JVC and 3DV have essentially "put the studio inside the camera," opening up vast creative opportunities in production and live broadcasting.

"JVC developed critical optical components for ZCam," said Robert Mueller, executive vice president of JVC. "It's a perfect fit for our sales organization. When ZCam is attached to our cameras, users get incredible benefits, including the ability to place graphics anywhere in a frame, whether in front or behind a subject in real-time without the limitations of bluescreen technology. The combination of JVC and 3DV's groundbreaking technology will take studios to an extraordinary new level."

Ori Braun, president of 3DV Systems, stated, "We are excited about the immediate opportunity this agreement offers us. JVC is the leading manufacturer of professional cameras and has a remarkable sales organization."
