World’s first tapeless news production at ITN honored by NATAS

Newbury, Berkshire, October 18, 2001: Quantel has won an Emmy for ‘outstanding achievement in technological advancement’ from the USA’s National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. The award recognizes ‘Pioneering effort in digital asset management for television news production’, following the successful development of the world’s first tapeless news system - Inspiration - in conjunction with UK independent national news provider, and co-winner of the Emmy, ITN.

The Inspiration system is centered around Quantel’s unique true random access Clipbox servers, with automation from OmniBus and browse technology from Telemedia. The Clipbox enables simultaneous access to, and editing of, all material held in its store by hundreds of journalists. Editing can start the moment any feed starts entering the server, the journalists having access to the video on their desktops, integrated with their AP ENPS newsroom computer system. Results are ready to go to air under automation control the second they are completed.

Trevor Francis, now Quantel’s Business Manager, News and Sports, was part of the ITN team that specified, trialled and put into operation the Inspiration system at ITN in his role as ITN’s Resources Manager. "We are absolutely delighted to have been recognized in this way," he said. "The Inspiration at ITN was truly pioneering – no one had succeeded in eliminating tape from the news production process before. Quantel’s server technology is key to its success, as was the teamwork between Quantel, ITN and the other partners. I subsequently joined Quantel so that I could bring the benefits of this new way of working in news to the broadest possible audience – it is truly revolutionary."

Since the first installation of Inspiration at ITN, Quantel has become the world’s foremost supplier of integrated news systems, and has developed the concept to bring its speed-to-air, productivity and economic benefits to smaller broadcast operations. Quantel integrated news systems are now installed in every continent and in every scale of broadcasting operation, from national and international broadcasters such as TVNZ (New Zealand), CBC/SRC (Canada), Botswana TV, TRT (Turkey) and GMTV (UK), to regionals such as TSR (Switzerland), KOMO TV (USA), and local broadcasters – Carlton Westcountry and Carlton Central (UK).
