MillimeterAPM/YMF Film and TV Music Business Fellowship Winner Announced

HOLLYWOOD, Calif.--—Associated Production Music, the largest provider of production music to the entertainment industry, and Young Musicians Foundation have awarded the first annual APM/YMF Film and TV Music Business Fellowship to Chanda Dancy, an aspiring, young composer living in Los Angeles.
“Most young composers aren’t aware of the different career paths open to them in the business of film and television music production, supervision and licensing. With this new fellowship, we intend to help change that,” said APM President Adam Taylor, who founded and endowed the program last year.
The winner was announced at the Todd-AO scoring stage on the CBS/Radford studio lot, where James Horner’s Academy Award winning score for Titanic and the film’s song “My Heart Will Go On” were recorded. The scoring stage is the largest and among the most modern in Los Angeles.
Presenting the award were APM President Adam Taylor, YMF Executive Director Edye Rugolo, and scoring composers George S. Clinton, Joseph Curiale, Laura Karpman and Jeff Rona. The first runner-up is Christopher Stafford. Alisha Bauer and Anouk Erni are both finalists.
“Winning this fellowship will give Chanda a real-world education in the business of composing for film and television,” said YMF Executive Director Edye Rugolo. “YMF exists to give young musicians these kinds of opportunities. Chanda has demonstrated the perseverance and dedication it takes to make it in the highly competitive film and television scoring business.”
YMF, which was solely responsible for selecting the fellow, conducted personal interviews with all five finalists, who were chosen from several dozen applicants. Dancy was awarded the fellowship based largely on her prior academic achievements. Her initiative in gaining real-world industry experience while studying at USC was also a factor. In YMF’s judgment, she stands to benefit the most from the program, which includes 16 different half-day sessions designed to provide her with direct insight into the business of scoring for production music libraries, music copyrights, licensing, clearances, as well as orchestra management. Dancy is the recipient of the ASCAP Foundation’s 2003 Henry Mancini Scholarship and the BMI Foundation’s Pete Carpenter Fellowship in Film Scoring for 2002. She recently received a graduate degree from USC in music scoring for motion pictures and television, and has composed music cues for several television programs, including Law and Order and the 2003 series, Dragnet. In addition, she’s written cues for more than a dozen student and independent film projects.
