Axis Films Showcases 4:4:4 Workflow
May 25, 2006 11:47 AM
Axis Films, a leading supplier of both film and electronic camera equipment, in collaboration with Rouge Element Films staged an innovative workshop on Friday, 12 May at Shepperton Studios, London. To an invited group of high-profile DOPs a complete high definition production capability was demonstrated.
Image capture was achieved with a Thomson Grass Valley Viper FilmStream camera and Zeiss Digiprime HD lenses provided by Rogue Element Films. Dan Mulligan, Director of Photography at Rogue Element Films explains: "We demonstrated it in a practical and easy way highlighting how this type of system is being used in the market. As a high-level process of recording equipment, it is important to select the right equipment and to explain what it does so that it can be provided to clients. The Viper FilmStream produces RAW uncompressed 4:4:4 RGB data and as there are no camera settings to calibrate other than framing and exposure decisions, using this camera leaves you freedom to think about your shots. In this respect, shooting with the Viper FilmStream is very much like shooting with film."
In addition to recording directly to the Sony SRW-1 portable recorder, which gives virtually lossless high definition recordings a direct dual link solution, was also shown utilising the company's Quantel eQ HDRGB system. Images captured directly on to the eQ system were compared in the preview theatre using a JVC DLA-HD2K projector.
"The ability to record directly from the Viper Filmstream camera head onto our flight cased, dual link capable eQ HDRGB editing system on stage here at Shepperton is an exciting solution for a commercial shoot or feature, it provides them with pristine quality and gives them a direct data workflow solution both in offline and online" comments Ralston Humble, editor at Axis Post.
Nick Bennett, DOP for numerous broadcast, feature, documentary and promotional films attended the workshop. "It was really useful to be involved because on a couple of occasions recently I have been approached to shoot using the Viper FilmStream. There is also a lot of chat and talk about the 4:4:4 workflow in the industry however very few people have seen this process working and truly understand the post method. This workshop really did demystify the 4:4:4 workflow. What is also interesting is that not a large amount of kit is needed so any production can be a lightweight set up if you want it to be. This method would definitely appeal to my promotional clientele who would appreciate the breathtaking quality of images that I witnessed at Shepperton."
All equipment shown is available for hire through Axis. Paul Carter, managing director at Axis Films concludes," What we have shown here is a workflow that is very exciting, time effective and commercially viable. I look forward to seeing many of our clients use this process."
