C4 Sports, the first electronic media trade show dedicated wholly to sports technology and being held July 17-19 in Las Vegas, will feature “HD on a Budget,” a hands-on technology showcase that will address the challenges of producing an HD broadcast with minimal resources.

“In the past, producing a high-quality product on a limited budget has been a tremendous challenge, and that is why HD is usually not considered as part of a sports broadcast production,” says Nigel Spratling, president, Mavens, and director of “HD on a Budget.” “Today, the anticipated cost differential between HD and SD equipment is only between 20 to 30 percent, and new camera and editing systems like those we will be using at ‘HD on a Budget’ are breaking the price barriers that have prevented organizations from achieving their desired results in the past.”

The “HD on a Budget” production team is composed of a group of Oregon State University students and will be led by Dale Matthews, director and founder of Inter-School Television at the college. Attendees can observe the eight-person team as they capture footage of Women's Club Volleyball exhibition games occurring on the show floor, using four HDV cameras. The team will then edit the content to produce a professional HD broadcast that will be distributed to HDTV monitors around the show floor, across the Las Vegas Convention Center’s cable network, and simultaneously streamed for viewing on the Internet.

“’HD on a Budget’ targets those sporting organizations who may not have top-tier funding for their sports programming, such as junior and community colleges, but who want to broadcast sports events in HD,” says Matthews. “This event will focus not only on the creation, but also on the distribution of HD content, and our hope is that attendees will recognize that HD broadcasts are quite affordable and much easier than expected to produce.”

In addition to offering attendees the chance to witness the creation of HDTV telecasts on a budget, presentations will describe how these broadcasts are executed, offer useful production tips, and identify pitfalls that should be avoided during HD productions. Demonstrations will provide attendees with the opportunity to participate in practical production examples and learn about new distribution techniques, including broadcasting HD material to hand-held devices such as cell phones.

“’HD on a Budget’ encapsulates the entire rationale behind C4-Sports, which is to educate members of the sporting industry about the technology that is being used to produce sports broadcasts,” says Gene Sanders, general manager, C4-Sports. “This event will show high schools, colleges, minor league teams, and other sporting organizations about the numerous benefits that accompany HD productions, as well as the new types of distribution methods that can be offered to sports enthusiasts.”
