HKM's Nelson Cabrera Drives Off with a Pair of Silvers at IAAA
Apr 29, 2005 9:49 AM
Director Nelson Cabrera of bicoastal HKM (www.hkm.com) has taken home two Silver statues in the 2004 International Automotive Advertising Awards competition.
Both honors are for Mini "Parking Ramp," via Crispin Porter + Bogusky, and were awarded in the categories of Passenger Cars/Sub-Subcompact/Television and Creative Arts-Television Budgeted Under $100,000. The innovative spot features a Mini making the slow crawl up the ramp of a parking garage, preparing the driver for the "rollercoaster" ride of a lifetime.
Known to some as "El Toro," Cabrera charged into 2005 following a run that would have emboldened far more established directors. For a director in only his second year as a spot helmer, 2004 was especially gratifying: in addition to the IAAAs, Cabrera's Mini-Cooper work earned him an Andy and four Telly Awards; his Mini and Showbound Naturals spots were finalists at the London International Advertising Awards; Cabrera garnered a pair of Suncoast Emmy Award nominations; was honored at the 2004 Clios Awards by Shoot Magazine as one of the up and coming directors to watch internationally; and was shortlisted at Cannes by CFP-F/Shots for the Young Directors Award.
It comes as no surprise that 2005 started with a bang. New comedy campaigns for Ford and Mcdonalds are breaking soon, with more in the queue. Cabrera has worked for a diverse range of clients including Mini, Earthlink, McDonalds, Ford, Jeep, Mitsubishi, Chrysler, Antismoking PSA, Showbound Naturals-Integrated Pet foods, and Colorado Lottery. Crispin Porter + Bogusky called on him for Earthlink "Block of the Day," a viral 20-clip campaign. A new clip was added to the website every week throughout the football season and Internet surfers could vote and download their favorite clips.
"Nelson is the 'build' that can actually be built, even in this climate," said HKM Executive Producer Carl Swan. "He has been working steadily, in every market, brings something special to every board, and every client wants to work with him again. That tells you something." Cabrera's success in commercials follows an accomplished career in feature films, working on over 20 across four continents and hundreds of spots with directors like Rocky Morton, Noam Murro, Frank Todaro, Rupert Sanders, Leslie Dektor, Marcus Nispel, Erich Joiner, Lance Accord, and Simon West.
Cabrera's second documentary, "Azuca (Sugar)," will be completed this year. The film deals with the growing health problems faced by immigrant families living and working on sugar farms next to the Everglades National Park in South Florida. A professional photographer, Cabrera is currently publishing a black and white photographic essay on the American Cowboy. He is repped by HKM in the US and by Industry Films in Toronto.
