CBS News is now operational with Sony’s XDCAM Professional Disc technology as its ENG platform. According to the network, the ability to accept content acquired on the optical system has significantly streamlined its news operations and production workflow, allowing footage to be shot, edited, and sent to air in a faster and more efficient manner.
CBS’s conversion to XDCAM technology by the news division and its stations represents a multimillion-dollar investment and will progress through the end of next year. CBS News bureaus here and abroad are currently utilizing XDCAM camcorders and decks in their day-to-day operations and will start equipping all of their owned-and-operated stations with XDCAM gear in early 2006.
This large-scale, long-term commitment to the XDCAM system is expected to deliver a strong return on CBS’s investment and allow its news division and owned stations to lower their overall total operating costs, while providing an even higher level of service.
“There are several benefits to our news operations of using the XDCAM system,” said Frank Governale, vice president of operations for CBS News. “We can simply get on-air with a story or footage quicker than ever before. We’ve significantly enhanced our newsgathering production and on-air processes, and expect many future operational improvements and efficiencies as our owned-and-operated stations adopt the XDCAM system.
