JVC and FilmLight showcase a digital film grading system
Aug 23, 2005 12:05 PM
A JVC DLA-HD2K projector has been installed in a digital film grading and workflow demonstration suite at the London premises of FilmLight, a world-leading pioneer of digital film technology. The system is being used by both JVC and FilmLight to demonstrate to potential customers post production and colour grading equipment.
The grading suite is typical of the size in use in the post industry, being approximately 25'x15'. Images are projected on to an 8ft. wide screen. A wide selection of feature film projects that have been graded on Baselight are used for demonstration purposes including digital footage from Cold Mountain.
A Baselight grading and finishing system is directly feeding the projector using a DVI signal providing real-time operation at resolutions of up to 4k. The system includes FilmLight's TrueLight 3D color management system, ensuring accurate representation of the final look on film.
"The HD2K is ideally suited for the post production and color grading market because of its compact size, very good-quality images, and cost effectiveness. It is very easy to calibrate with our TrueLight system. We've been very pleased with the performance of the projector, and in this size of installation it performs well. The projector is being used by JVC and FilmLight on a mutual basis to demonstrate the qualities of the grading system and projection system to potential customers. So far the suite has been very popular with post production facilities, DOPs, colorists, and editors," states Peter Stothart, commercial director at FilmLight.
The HD2K achieves the look, feel, and resolution of cinema film with stunning clarity. It produces natural but deeply rich colours and cinema-quality blacks with smooth gradations and low noise. The high-definition resolution is at 1920x1080 at 60Hz and the projector has a contrast ratio of 2000:1. The two-part system comprises a projector head containing three native true HD D-ILA resolution chips and a digital video processor and up-converter.
Ian Scott, director, professional video operation, U.K. at JVC comments, "We are delighted that the HD2K is FilmLight's projector of choice for demonstrations. As a number of high-profile post production facilities in London have already discovered, the HD2K projector proves itself capable of faithfully reproducing near to life film qualities and accuracy. Sharing this joint opportunity to promote digital film technology within the post production community promises to further establish the HD2K as a force in digital film making."
