Professional Products has formed an alliance with Sony to publicly launch the Sony XDCAM-HD Professional Disc System to the broadcast community at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. With the momentum surging for this new high-definition optical camcorder technology, the two companies decided that this would be an ideal time to educate broadcasters, cinematographers, and freelance videographers alike that now is a good time to make the switch to disc-based media with this digital production option.
Professional Products, one of the first to sell the XDCAM, hosted these two-hour sessions which were designed to enrich broadcasters’ understanding of the XDCAM workflow and XDCAM-HD technology, to highlight the interoperability with other leading NLE products, and to expose the various parts of the industry where optical technology has been accepted.
The seminars were conducted by Sony’s top optical product sales support engineers, Reginald Watson and Peter Crithery. Using the two-hour audio/visual presentation as a platform to give clarity and to bolster discussions about the benefits of moving from tape to disc-based recording, these sessions gave the audience much to consider when deciding to make the transition to HD and the new optical disc workflow. The presenters provided a greater understanding of the capabilities and critical features of the XDCAM.
According to Bob Ott, vice president of Sony’s Optical/Networking Products and Marketing division, “these seminars are a commitment from Sony and Professional Products to not only educate but gather information from professionals that will impact the development of current new products but also those workflows of the future. Our business today is about the entire system not just the format or camera. The input offered by the professionals attending these seminars is invaluable and furthers the development of improved workflow, reducing costs and giving the professional more time to create than wait for the process.”
These events were presented in combination with Professional Products, a leading Sony reseller, the National Press Club and Sony. The attendees represented a broad cross-section of industry insiders including station engineers, cameramen, technicians, editors and executives.
“The decision to transition to HD is upon us,” says Mark Polla, vice president of sales, Professional Products. He continues, “The XDCAM and now XDCAM-HD platforms have introduced a completely new approach to shooting, producing, creating … really it impacts the entire workflow all the way through to archiving. To those that have already embraced it, it makes sense on so many levels. Interesting enough, the Washington area has an inordinate amount of Betacam SP gear still in use every day so we want to get the Optical Disc story out in front of as many of those users as possible in order for them to be armed with the information they need to start making the switch."
