The Mix Foundation for Excellence in Audio has announced the nominees for the 21st Annual Technical Excellence & Creativity Awards, to be held Saturday, Oct. 8, 2005, at the New York Marriott Marquis. The TEC Awards is the foremost event honoring outstanding technical and creative achievement in professional audio production and product design.
Nominations in 16 categories of Technical Achievement (product design) and eight categories of Creative Achievement (production) were made by a select panel of more than 100 audio industry professionals for products and projects released or completed during the eligibility period of April 1, 2004, to March 31, 2005. The winners will be chosen by a ballot in the August issue of Mix magazine, mailed to more than 40,000 BPA-qualified subscribers.
New this year to the Creative Achievement categories is the TEC Award for Surround Sound Production, recognizing outstanding surround sound recordings for CD and/or DVD releases. Among the nominees for Technical Achievement, seven represent first-time TEC-nominated companies. Leading manufacturers with multiple nominations this year include Audio-Technica and Digidesign with three apiece, and Mackie with a total of four. Among the nominees for Creative Achievement, Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival was nominated twice, in the categories of Remote/Broadcast Production and Surround Sound Production, and Green Day was nominated for both Outstanding Album and Outstanding Single or Track for American Idiot.
“This year’s crop of TEC Awards nominees is especially strong,” said Hillel Resner, president of the Mix Foundation. “It was a banner year for new innovations in audio hardware and software, as well as outstanding production efforts for recordings, live performance, film and television. We anticipate an exciting show in New York.”
The TEC Awards will be held on the second night of the 119th AES convention, and is expected to draw more than 700 top audio professionals from around the world. Proceeds of the TEC Awards are donated to organizations working for the prevention of noise-induced hearing loss in the music environment, and to scholarships for students of the audio arts and sciences.
