(NEW YORK, NY) - G-SAM (www.g-sam.org), the world's first global trade association dedicated to accelerating the adoption of asset management technologies, successfully completed an intensive two-day conference as the official preshow to the Annual SMPTE Conference at the New York Hilton.

With the support of lead sponsors, including Avid, BBC, IBM and SGI, G-SAM assembled a broad range of speakers and panelists, including keynote speeches from industry icons Gavin Schutz, president of SMPTE and CTO of Ascent Media Group, and Dennis Pannuto, CIO of BBDO Worldwide. These speakers and others addressed the growing role and complex issues of digital asset management in the media and entertainment industries, including broadcast.

"This is a very logical partnership that creates a win-win for both groups," said Frederick C. Motts, executive director of SMPTE. "We are pleased to kick off a week of world-class activities in the field of broadcast engineering with G-SAM's two-day conference on Digital Asset Management, which is a key issue in how broadcast content will be catalogued, archived, and managed."

G-SAM 2003 is unique in that actual users from multiple industries formed its agenda from the ground up. Member companies of this committee included ABC (NYSE: DIS), BBDO (NYSE: OMC), Harley Davidson (NYSE: HDI), HBO (NYSE: AOL), Technicolor, a division of Thomson (NYSE: TMS), and several others. The conference was co-produced by the Entertainment Technology Alliance (ETA), a leading worldwide conference and event organizer in the digital convergence sectors. The conference exceeded attendance expectations with more than 300 registered delegates, analysts and vendors in attendance.

Gavin Schutz's keynote presentation pulled no punches. Starting off with, "Somebody has got to tell the truth," he comprehensively laid out the challenges of implementing an enterprise DAM system in the world of media and entertainment. This set the tone for an informative and controversial tone that prevailed throughout the conference. Dennis Pannuto, CIO, BBDO, gave the day 2 keynote about uncovering the all-important ROI in asset management. All sessions were tape-recorded and are available at g-sam.org.

Throughout both days, sessions tackled real-world asset management concerns, such as intellectual property rights, justifying costs and making the business case for DAM, and overcoming internal and cultural barriers to acceptance. Speakers and panelists included Jeremy Laws, VP, Universal Studios; Barbara Cross, Sony Pictures Entertainment; Bill Miller, VP Engineering ABC TV; Mitchell Linden, SVP for North American Ops, BBC; Jim Occhiuto, VP Technology & Broadcast Operations, Showtime; Gwynne McConkey, SVP Operations, IS and Technology, Lifetime Television; Brett Shamosh, College Sports Television; Carl Hixon, Director of Technology, HBO; Robin Adelson, Asst. General Council Primedia; Rick Owen, VP Advanced Systems Group, Cisco, and Bert Sugayan, SVP, Corbis. Manufacturer representatives included product managers and high-level executives, including Peter Fasciano, Co-Founder and Corporate Fellow, Avid Technology; Ralph Biesemeyer, SVP, Intel; Bruce Lyon, VP Media and Entertainment, Sun Microsystems; David Lipsey, VP Media & Entertainment, Artesia Technologies; Michael Moon, CEO Gistics; Gail Whipple, VP Global Digital Media, IBM; and representatives of EMC, Harris, WAM!NET, and eMotion.

A special presentation showcased the Worldwide Retail Exchange, which is the premier Internet-based business-to-business exchange in the retail e-marketplace. This Exchange brings together 64 retail members who deployed DAM technologies to optimize the supply chain for its members and achieve savings of over $917 million. The first G-SAM Working Committee was also announced for the Advertising and Publishing Committee. This committee is comprised of members of the user, vendor, integrator and media community. Participation is welcome. The day finished with a joint GSAM/SMPTE cocktail reception to send off our members with lots of food for thought and to strengthen the community of users, integrators and vendors.
