HD EXPO Enjoys Record Attendance

With knowledgeable speakers and dynamic visual examples on the main stage, informative vendors in the open tent, and numerous interested parties in attendance, the third HD EXPO held on June 27, 2002, in Burbank, CA, proved to be an event which not only informed and showcased, but entertained.
The event was held at the Barwick Studios in a spacious indoor/outdoor arena, hosting the latest in HD tools ranging from production to post production. Compared to the previous EXPOS, this one more than surpassed the attendance quota. One of the exhibitors noted, “It’s hard to get away from the booth to grab a soda, people keep bombarding me.” The overwhelming turnout of attendees allowed for the gregariousness of all of the vendors and for the success for the HD industry. Over 500 industry professionals attended the EXPO.
Leading off the presentations on the main stage, was Dino Parks , Director of Photography for “Simon: The English Legionnaire”, which not only promises to be an exceptional film, but was also a stunning example of the detail and beauty that HD technology can bring to a movie. The stunning backdrop to the film, shot both in Monaco and Algiers, was a wonderful, visually stunning, and exciting opening to the EXPO.
Issues surrounding HD technology were addressed by the diverse speakers. Randall Dark, President of HD Vision Studios not only highlighted the differences between 24P and 1080i, he discussed the different ways that 1080i and 24P technology can be used separately or in conjunction with the more traditional production and post production technologies of the past. He did so by using well executed and precise visual examples, which not only helped to clarify and highlight his lecture, but also exhibited the highly organized and well executed visual technicians of HD EXPO. HD Visions Studios is a complete production and post production facility specializing in HD technologies located in Studio City.
Also in attendance was AVID Technology & Keycode Media, whose exciting demonstration brilliantly illustrated the advantages of their newly redesigned HD/DS system presented by Avid’s “DS Guru” Lucas Wilson. The demonstration showed the workings of the post-production workflow, and how their equipment enhances and improves this aspect of post production.
Another highlight of the EXPO was Panasonic showcasing its newly acquired AJHDC 27 VariCam presented by Michael Brinkman and David Wiswell. The company not only provided interested onlookers with its multiple options and support equipment, but also lectured on how over cranking and under cranking are possible in their HD Digital Camera instead of having to wait until post. The two presenters also explored the benefits of using 720P for acquisition.
After each of the specialized presentations a question and answer session followed. This facet of the EXPO provided the attendees with the option to further their education and understanding of HD.
The “Fantasy Island” theme was complete with fresh tropical fruit, beverages, Polynesian greeters in grass skirts, a steel drum band, a tropical vodka tasting bar, and many enthusiastic guests dressed in their finest Hawaiian gear. In fact, all that was missing from the HD EXPO’s “Fantasy Island” was Mr. Rourke’s assistant, Tattoo. Despite this “small” oversight, the producers of HD EXPO, Alan Young and Kristin Petrovich, created a relaxed and enjoyable environment conducive to the informative, social, and business aspects of High Definition Technology and the industry in general.
The HD EXPO is an event held quarterly which will be executed again on the 26th of September.
