Windows Media DRM Technology Helps Enable Secure Download and Viewing of Online Films

Santa Monica, CA - Movielink, the new online movie rental service, today announced that it has selected Microsoft to be a key provider of both Windows Media Digital Rights Management (DRM) and Windows Media Audio and Video technology that will help enable the service to offer consumers reliable and secure movies.

Movielink's DRM solutions, one of which Microsoft will supply, will allow a customer to choose the desired viewing format of a licensed movie.

"We have chosen Windows Media Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology to offer our customers a more secure way to download Movielink's great selection of feature films," Movielink CEO Jim Ramo said. "Windows Media technology enables Movielink's customers to easily rent and view encrypted digital versions of movies on their computers. We are pleased to be working with a company committed to the high quality delivery of our valuable content."

Windows Media DRM technology enables Movielink the ability to grant access to only those customers who have purchased the right to play licensed material. This, combined with Movielink's other security measures, helps ensure that Movielink can utilize the IP platform to offer high quality, reliable content consistent with initial business rules such as 24-hour unlimited viewing rental and future business models established by Movielink and its content providers.

"Movielink's service will unlock a wealth of content, taking personal entertainment to a new level of convenience and reach for consumers," said Dave Fester, General Manager of the Windows Digital Media Division at Microsoft Corp. "With Windows Media Audio and Video and Digital Rights Management technology, Movielink can help turn the Web into a more secure venue for offering consumers a broad selection of high-quality digital movies."

Movielink's service is compatible with Microsoft Windows technologies, including the popular Windows Media Player. Windows Media Player will offer Movielink users high quality, fast and flexible playback of films, previews and clips. Users will have full viewing controls, including play, pause, stop, fast forward and rewind.
