If you've ever wanted to try working with surround-sound mic techniques, the latest PortaMic 5.1 camera-mountable surround mic from Holophone makes it easier and relatively painless via its $599 price point.
Although this mic won't capture what a separate audio recorder can deliver in the field, the product's compact size and low learning curve make it an intriguing addition to in-studio, field recording, documentary, and ENG work.
The unit's six separate mic elements are arranged to correspond with 5.1 loudspeaker setups with no additional mixing required. The encoded PortaMic 5.1 recordings can be converted back to six channels using the company's new D-Code multichannel decoder or a Dolby Pro Logic II decoder. www.holophone.com
