The Music Picture
Nov 1, 2008 12:00 PM, By Cynthia Wisehart
One of the things we learned from building reel-exchange.com is that musicians can often create great video. Some of the Reel-Exchange members we've talked to first picked up a camera in the service of their own music, and then, once comfortable with the technology, they added video clients to their businesses.
So next month, when our sister publication Remix brings its Remix Hotel back to Los Angeles, we'll join in, hoping to offer some practical help for music artists and their collaborators looking to break into video or expand their skills and businesses. In addition to video technology and demonstrations onsite, we're hosting three panels for sound/picture artists. Topics — addressed by a range of local video professionals — include shooting and postproduction for music videos and how to start and maintain a video-production business.
Remix Hotel made its reputation in locations including Miami, Atlanta, and New York, offering hands-on access to the technology behind electronic and urban music. This time around, if you're looking for a way to get a closer look at tools including Avid and Digidesign software, Propellerhead Software's Reason, and Cakewalk's Sonar, it's a good place to tinker.
It's also a good place to see remix talent in action. Last March, at Remix Hotel Miami (despite the fire marshal's multiple body counts), people packed in for Erykah Badu and DJs including Richie Hawtin, Deadmau5, James Zabiela, Francois K, DJ Dan, John Acquaviva, M.A.N.D.Y., Tiefschwarz, Dubfire and Davide Squillace, Heidi, Anja Schneider, Gui Boratto, Jamie Jones, DJ Papi Love, Richard Devine, Carmen Rizzo, and Eclectic Method. To name a few. Expect similar in LA.
On the panel front, September's Remix Hotel Atlanta saw presentations by Grammy Award-winning superproducer Bryan-Michael Cox, who discussed how he created Monica's “Still Standing” track, featuring Ludacris. Film composers Michael Kohler, Richard Devine, Josh Kay, Erich Netherton, Paul Jenkins, and Huston Singletary shared the knowledge. In LA, attendees will hear from professionals including MTV Post and Fortitude.
Remix Hotel LA is Dec. 4-6, 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., at SAE Institute of Technology Los Angeles, 6565 W. Sunset Blvd. For more and to see videos from previous Remix Hotel events, go to remixmag.com/remixhotel.
On the music and video front, also check out our Sound for Picture channel in our Reel-Exchange community at reel-exchange.com/discipline/sound_for_picture. There you'll find a range of audio and music professionals as well as music libraries. In particular, see the Composers section at reel-exchange.com/discipline/sound_for_picture/composer. You may find the sound partner you've been looking for, or you may want to put your own hat in the ring.
