Can film scanning get better?
No one's giving up oncelluloid yet, but it's striking to see the amount of innovation still on tap from companies such as Arri and Aaton. Cintel is another. At IBC 2008, the United Kingdom-based film-scanner manufacturer announced that its Ditto device will support one of the latest developments in high-speed storage: Bright Systems' BrightClip recording technology.
Ditto, a speedy pin-registered scanner, gains further throughput improvements with the BrightClip technology; BrightClip improves media recording and playback to hard-drive arrays with better layout of data onto the disks, including supporting out-of-sequence frame writing.
At IBC, Cintel also demo'd improvements in its 4K dataMill film scanner, which was paired with DVS Clipster running at 5fps. Cintel says that the high-speed HSDL data link employed is the most cost-effective and efficient method of data transfer. www.cintel.co.uk
